Potential & Aligned Values v.s Skills – where do you place your bet when you recruit for a role?

When you recruit for the attitude and for that shared core values, you recruit not only a team member, but a lifelong friendship.

Dinner catch-up with the specialists, my life-long friends.

🎇 Potential & Aligned Values versus Actual Skills – where do you place your bet when you recruit for a role?

Tricia Tan, a compensation and benefit specialist today. 12 years ago when she signed on my employment contract, she asked 'What is AWS (Annual Wage Supplement)?' 😅
Azila Shabnam, a talent development specialist today. 11 years ago when i interviewed her for a junior talent development role, she knew nuts about talent development. 😆

But i loved their attitude, and the core values they shared, not only with me, but the rest of the team and the organisation. It's so true that when you recruit for the attitude and for that shared core values, you recruit not only a team member, but a lifelong friendship. Today, i have 'recruited' many lifelong friendships i am eternally grateful for, even years after we part ways professionally.

As for the lack of that experience and skills back then? I assessed potential, and had every faith that it would be just a matter of time they’d grow into it. Look at the ladies now. Nothing had stopped them from learning and growing into the roles. They are role models for those who are learning new skills.

When candidates don’t come in a full package, and you had to make some choices, what do you recruit for?
